When Acton's Cain and Abel called it quits in early 2008, it seemed like an untimely demise for one of the more vital bands to have emerged from Southern Ontario's fertile punk rock scene in the new millennium. The band had garnered glowing reviews everywhere from Exclaim! to Punknews, shared stages with bands like Cancer Bats, the New Amsterdams, Aloha, Owen, and Attack in Black, but, as bands do, they fell apart.

Less than a year later, vocalist and guitarist Peter van Helvoort (a founding member of the Most Serene Republic) was back writing songs with guitarist Christian Turner. Letting go of some of their more youthful musical tendencies, van Helvoort embraced a love of bands like Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Band in crafting a new batch of songs that he and Turner would develop into the first notes of Ulysses and the Siren.
