Peter Katz and the Curious - More Nights
Updated: Monday, 28 July 2008
Like any new love, Peter Katz’ and the Curious’ latest release, More Nights, brings feelings of giddiness and goose bumps as the Torontonian’s warm and inviting voice envelopes the room. Knees weaken, blood rushes and thumbs ache as they repeat repeat repeat the poetic verses on the iPods containing them. From the clean and honest sweetness of ‘I Do (Emily and Eric’s Song)’ to the not-so-subtle anti-war ballad in ‘Forgiveness’ to the personal reflections and aspirations in ‘These Are The Days,’ More Nights is a cornucopia of hopes, dreams and fears, all set to captivating folk music. The personal nature of the songs is what makes Peter Katz and the Curious stand out from the masses of acoustic artists scratching and clawing to make it in the mainstream.

More than just a simple arrangement of rhyming words and alliterations, More Nights is a collection of masterpieces with each word of verse of each song carrying the weight of the passion and seriousness that punctuates Katz’ musical existence.

The only caveat? It’s not summer music. The deep, soulful beauty of the album lacks the one-note catchiness of traditional heat wave hits. Lacking the strong downbeat and sugary sweetness that forces ‘I Kissed A Girl’ out from the radio airwaves ever five minutes, it’s unlikely to make the soundtrack to many 905 barbeques. However, what it lacks in phony subversiveness, More Nights makes up in substance and it would be the perfect record to set the mood at an end-of-summer bonfire camp out. Can’t get into it now? Wait until the leaves change colour and you’ll see how powerful the music will be.

It’s that sort of lovely, first-dance, first-kiss, first look at real like that is full of the kind of hope, reflection and idealism that can only be found in a twenty-something who truly believes that art and music can change the world. More Nights may not be able to stop global warming or bring the troops home, but it will certainly inspire you to fight, and at the end of the day, what else can you hope for?
